The Graduate bookshelf by Jean Nouvel is a striking expression of architectural precision transformed into a singular furniture element. Conceived as a suspended line that seems to defy gravity, this modular bookcase embraces an extraordinary sense of lightness. Its name reflects its ascending composition perfectly aligned with Nouvel’s visionary approach to design.

From this architectural base, slender steel tie rods descend gracefully, each marked with numbered notches to accommodate the adjustable shelving. These fine elements create a rhythmic vertical composition, balancing transparency and structure while allowing the shelves to appear as if floating in space.

The shelves themselves showcase advanced craftsmanship. Built with a plywood core and finished with anodized aluminum in natural or black, they combine durability with a refined, modern aesthetic. The system not only stores but also displays, elevating books and objects into part of the design language.

Graduate’s modularity allows it to adapt to diverse spaces fusing technology, material integrity, and elegance.

Jean Nouvel, a long-term collaborator of Molteni&C whose designs have become icons of the brand, was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2008.
