Italian Design Around America: Interiors to Escape Into

Allison Cave for M Magazine,

THERE IS A PARTICULAR KIND OF SUMMER MOMENT WHEN SPACES FEEL IMBUED WITH LIFE. LIGHT STRETCHES LONGER ACROSS SURFACES, ROOMS OPEN MORE EASILY TO THEIR SURROUNDINGS, AND THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BEGIN TO SOFTEN.

Across the United States and the Caribbean, a series of private residences captures this sensation in unique and interesting ways. From the hills of Los Angeles to the peaceful landscapes of the Atlantic Coast, and from Miami to St Barths, each project reflects a distinct vision of space shaped by the local climate, by light, and by a delicate rhythm of life. Within these environments, Molteni&C contributes through systems and furnishings that highlight each property’s characteristic features, bringing the brand’s culture of quality living to America, coast to coast.

534 Chalette Drive, Beverly Hills

High above Los Angeles, in Trousdale Estates, this villa embodies a sense of openness that extends to the horizon. Originally built in the 1970s, it has been redefined through a studied intervention that balances structure with light.

In the heart of the home, the kitchen designed by Vincent Van Duysen opens fully into the space. Black matte lacquer cabinetry, lava stone surfaces, and bronze detailing create a distinctive palette that shifts subtly over the course of the day. The Bright wall unit introduces a soft vertical rhythm, its backlit glass shelves adding depth without interruption.

Elsewhere, storage is integrated with the same precision: Gliss Master wardrobes by Van Duysen in larix dark wood organize the private areas, while custom closets and a 505 UP system by Nicola Gallizia extend this continuity into the bathrooms and secondary spaces. The interior thus feels composed, yet fluid — defined, but not at all rigid.

Villa Odin, Los Angeles

In nearby Encino, the 18,000 square foot Villa Odin introduces generous volumes while remaining grounded in a refined balance of materials and an intentional flow, incorporating Scandinavian influences and inspired by the Norse god, Odin.

The Prime kitchen by Vincent Van Duysen acts as a central reference point, where Thermo Oak and Silk Silica surfaces introduce texture and depth. The Bright wall system completes the composition, combining glass shelving and bronze details in a way that feels precise but unforced. A secondary butler’s kitchen reinterprets the same system with a lighter palette, maintaining continuity across the home.

Throughout the interiors, pieces such as Gio Ponti’s D.154.2 armchair and Vincent Van Duysen’s Aster table bring scale into focus, creating moments of intimacy within larger spaces. Outdoors, the Arc table by Foster + Partners and the Green Point bench by Van Duysen extend this balance into the landscape, where the house opens seamlessly onto the luxuriant garden.

Private Villa, East Hampton

In East Hampton, the project emphasizes outdoor living as a seamless extension of the indoor environment. The architecture establishes continuity with the landscape, and the furnishings from the Molteni&C Outdoor Collection define space without distracting from the beauty of the natural setting.

The Petalo armchair and pouf by Vincent Van Duysen introduce soft, comfortable seating, while Van Duysen’s Guell sunbed completes the arrangement for leisurely moments under open skies. These pieces define an outdoor environment that encourages informal, everyday use, supporting a lifestyle that moves spontaneously between indoors and out.

Private Residence, Miami

In Miami’s St. Regis Residences, interiors are shaped by openness and the joie de vivre that a subtropical climate inspires. The layout presents fluid connections between kitchen, living, and dining areas, with surfaces that are continuous and transitions are minimized.

Molteni&C kitchens support this approach through fine materiality and custom compositions. Modular and tailored storage throughout the residences ensure spatial flexibility while maintaining a sense of clear order.
